Watching

As part of our training, the college sent the students out on placements on Sundays to different churches, to assist the pastor and hopefully get to preach every now and then. I did not want to preach so I sang, which at the time is what I thought I did best. My first placement was at a church in Doncaster and, being there the whole day, we would have to go to people’s houses for Sunday lunch. Members would take turns to host the students, and one week the group I was with went to the home of a West Indian couple, Fred and May. I latched on to May straight away because she reminded me of my mother, whom I missed, and before long I spent more time with the couple, even staying the odd weekend as well. At college it was a struggle living with so many strangers, each with their own ‘baggage’ and perspectives on God and the universe, and a night at Fred and May’s was a dose of normality and home.

Fred was a quiet man, but as I watched him with his family I saw an honourable commitment that was unwavering. It was upsetting when a few months later he passed away. When May asked me to sing at his funeral I felt such sorrow that they had lost a man who was so committed to his family. As I watched his children I could see that they loved him. If it were my father that had died, I couldn’t say I would feel the same. I had not had the example of a good father in my childhood and until then I truly believed that a father was a worthless waste of space who I could well do without. Upon meeting Fred I started to see what a good father was like. And, I have to say, it hurt to see what I had missed. I didn’t know that in reality I was yearning for the Father’s love.
